Pet microchipping in Penrith

Creating better relationships

With new rules being implemented recently, there is much confusion regarding microchipping legislation. We hope this clarifies a few things.

As of the 1st of July 1999, all puppies, kittens, dogs and cats sold or given away must be microchipped. This applies to all breeders, pet shops and to the general public (i.e. if you have a dog or cat that has just had a litter, you must have them microchipped before you can sell them/give them away, including when given to pet shops).

People with dogs already that are not microchipped must do so if they are not currently registered with the council. If they are registered with the council, they will still need to be microchipped before July 2002.
Cats purchased or obtained after 1st July 1999 must have their cats microchipped. Owners of cats acquired prior to this date must have their cats microchipped or have them wear a collar with an identification tag.

Microchipping can be done within a normal consultation and simply involves your dog or cat having a needle.  This can be done when having your pet vaccinated or any time that suits you. We then organise the details to be sent away to be entered onto an NSW register. This is done for no charge, but please let us know if you would like your details entered on a national register. The national register is functional 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, as opposed to only during business hours with the NSW register. While there is a small extra charge, some would feel it worthwhile for extra security.

Council registration

Council registration is a separate issue and involves you taking your dog's microchip details to the council. Registration is now for life, not yearly. It is less expensive for de-sexed animals and owners that are pensioners. We suggest, if you have a young puppy, to leave registration until the dog is de-sexed at 6 months because it is cheaper.
